Description
Victor Wembanyama arrived in the NBA in 2023 as the most hyped draft prospect in a generation, taken first overall by the San Antonio Spurs after years of viral footage from France showing a 7-foot-4 teenager handling the ball, shooting threes, and swatting shots like a guard trapped in a center's body. He did not just meet the hype, he outran it. In his rookie year he led all rookies in scoring, rebounding, and blocks, and he became the second rookie ever to lead the entire league in blocks per game, joining Manute Bol from 1985-86. Voters made him the first unanimous Rookie of the Year since Karl-Anthony Towns, and the first Frenchman to win the award, slotting him alongside David Robinson and Tim Duncan as the only Spurs to do so. Year two was supposed to be the leap, and for half a season it was. Wembanyama was scoring at nearly 25 points a game, rebounding at an even higher clip than his rookie year, and playing his way toward his first All-Star selection and toward being the runaway favorite for Defensive Player of the Year. Then, in February 2025, the story turned frightening rather than triumphant: doctors found a deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot, in his right shoulder shortly after that All-Star weekend. The Spurs shut him down for the rest of the season, he underwent surgery in March, and the games-played threshold that would have made him DPOY-eligible was gone along with the games themselves. It was the kind of injury that had ended other careers, and for months nobody, including Wembanyama, knew for certain how his body would respond. He was medically cleared to return that July, and by the time the following season opened he was back on the floor, the scare behind him but very much a part of his story now. This card comes from a different kind of milestone than anything on the stat sheet. For fifteen years, from 2009-10 through 2024-25, every officially licensed NBA card belonged to Panini; Topps was locked out of basketball the entire time Wembanyama has been a professional. That changed on October 1, 2025, when the NBA license reverted to Topps under its parent company Fanatics, ending a wait long enough that the last time Topps held it, LeBron James had yet to win his first championship. The 2025-26 Match Attax release was part of that reopening, an NBA-licensed set built around Topps' international trading-card-game brand, with "Breakthrough Ballers" running as one of its chase insert lines alongside names like 100 Club and Hot Prospects. Because of that gap in licensing, this is not a Wembanyama rookie card in the traditional sense, and it is not from his rookie season; those cards exist only from 2023-24 Panini products. What it represents instead is something else worth having: a Topps card of Victor Wembanyama at all, issued the moment the company got back into the business of making one, pairing basketball's most closely watched young star with the return of a name that had been absent from the sport for a decade and a half.

How This Card Scores
This card scores 71% overall — the average of its five SWAPP™ ratings, each measured as set out below. A brand-new (October 2025) foil insert of a hugely popular, heavily traded young superstar, graded by a small budget company rather than a major grader; visually shiny but simple, with limited and still-developing graded population data.
- SellabilityHigh · 88%
- High sellability index. Wembanyama cards across all products move quickly and in high volume on eBay and other marketplaces due to his superstar rookie hype.
- Wow Factor60%
- Worked out from how the card looks: a modern card with a base design (no parallel or special finish), which starts at 60% on its design. No autograph or patch is needed for that score.
- Age40%
- Worked out from the card's age: released 2025-10, it has been out about 1 year. Past six months, with comps to price it against, a card scores 40%; the next step comes at five years. That puts it at 40%.
- Popularity92%
- Victor Wembanyama is one of the NBA's most talked-about young stars, generating constant headlines, search interest and social media buzz.
- Population CountLow* · 40 · 73% Rarity
- About 40 graded copies (estimated) across the grading companies — low population. As a brand-new, non-serial-numbered insert graded mainly by a small budget company, published population reports are sparse, so the total is an estimate from the limited CGC data available.
