Description
Cooper Flagg arrived in the NBA carrying more hype than almost any prospect in recent memory, and the 2025-26 season did little to talk him down. Dallas won the draft lottery with only a 1.8 percent chance at the top pick, and when the ping-pong balls fell their way the Mavericks took the Duke forward first overall. It came at a strange moment for the franchise, barely five months removed from trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers, a deal that had left the fan base furious. Flagg was pitched, almost immediately, as the answer to that wound.
He had already lived up to comparable expectations in college. Reclassifying a year early to enroll at Duke, he became a consensus All-American and swept the sport's top individual honors, the Wooden and Naismith Awards, while leading the Blue Devils to a 35-4 record and a Final Four appearance. None of that guaranteed an easy transition to the pros, especially not for a teenager stepping into a rebuilding situation, but Flagg's rookie year turned into one of the most statistically rare debuts the league has seen. He averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists across 70 starts, shooting 46.8 percent from the field, and became just the second rookie since the 1973-74 season, after Michael Jordan, to lead his own team outright in points, rebounds, assists and steals.
The Rookie of the Year race that followed was not a coronation. His former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel, taken fourth overall by Charlotte, pushed him to the second-smallest voting margin since the current format began in 2002-03, a 26-point gap that made the two ex-teammates the first pair from the same college team to finish first and second in the award's history. Flagg won it anyway, becoming the second-youngest Rookie of the Year ever behind only LeBron James, even as the Mavericks around him endured a difficult, injury- and turmoil-marked season that kept them out of the playoffs.
This card is his flagship Topps rookie, card #201 from the 2025-26 set, done in the Crackleboard Foil parallel treatment. It landed at a genuinely unusual moment for the hobby: Topps returned to NBA card licensing for the first time in sixteen years specifically for this rookie class, with Flagg as the set's cover athlete. That timing, paired with a rookie season that instantly drew Jordan-era statistical comparisons, is why his cards became one of the defining stories in basketball collecting the moment the product hit shelves.
