Description

Victor Wembanyama arrived in the NBA carrying the heaviest hype of any prospect since LeBron James, and he did it from an unusual path. Rather than climbing through American high school and college ball, he was a professional in France by age 15, playing for Nanterre 92 and then ASVEL before a decisive final season with Metropolitans 92, where he led the French LNB Pro A league in points, rebounds, and blocks and was named league MVP. He led all players in the French LNB Pro A league in points, rebounds and blocks per game and was named the league MVP, though his team was swept by Monaco in the finals just days before the NBA Draft. On June 22, 2023, the San Antonio Spurs selected him with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draft at Barclays Center in New York. The rookie season that followed lived up to the noise. At 7-foot-4 with an 8-foot wingspan, Wembanyama led all rookies in points (21.4), rebounds (10.6) and blocks (3.6) per game, in addition to ranking fourth in assists (3.9) and second in steals (1.2) per game. He became the first rookie to finish a season with at least 1,500 points, 250 assists and 250 blocked shots, and by season's end he was the first player in NBA history to score 1,500 points (1,522), block 250 shots (254) and hit 100 3-point shots (128) in a single season. He was also named to the All-Defensive First Team, becoming the first rookie to make First Team All-Defense and the youngest in league history. The individual brilliance came without a corresponding run of wins — the Spurs were a rebuilding team — but the numbers were unambiguous, and Wembanyama was named the NBA's Rookie of the Year, garnering all 99 first-place votes, becoming the sixth unanimous Rookie of the Year in the last 40 years. He is the third player in Spurs franchise history to win the award, joining David Robinson (1990) and Tim Duncan (1998), a lineage the organization has been eager to point to. The path since has not been a straight line upward. In his second season he was even better statistically, but midway through it his career took a frightening turn: the team announced that Wembanyama had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, discovered shortly after his first career All-Star Game appearance. It was a serious health scare rather than a routine injury — a sports medicine specialist warned the clot could have traveled to his lungs and been fatal — and it ended his 2024-25 season immediately, costing him a near-certain Defensive Player of the Year award he was heavily favored to win. He underwent surgery and spent months on blood thinners before announcing to French newspaper L'Équipe that he had recovered and was officially cleared to return ahead of the 2025-26 season. This card is his true rookie card from that unanimous, record-setting first season: a 2023-24 Panini Prizm base issue, card #136, pictured in Spurs black and silver. Prizm's chrome, prism-refractive design has been the flagship rookie set of the NBA card market for nearly a decade, and Wembanyama's example in it captures a player who arrived as a once-in-a-generation prospect, delivered on it immediately as a rookie, and then had that ascent interrupted by a genuine medical emergency before he ever got the chance to build on it further.

RCRookie CardTrue Rookie CardThe hobby’s definitive rookie card for this player: usually the first card in the fully licensed flagship set, with the team’s name and logos, rather than an earlier draft-pick, college or unlicensed issue. Like Michael Jordan’s 1986 Fleer, it is the one collectors value above the player’s other rookie-year cards. For Victor Wembanyama, that is the 2023-24 Panini Prizm #136.
