Description

Victor Wembanyama arrived in the NBA carrying more advance hype than almost any prospect in a generation. A 7-foot-4 Frenchman with a wingspan to match, he had been dominating professional basketball in his home country since his mid-teens, and by the time the San Antonio Spurs won the draft lottery and took him first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, scouts and even opposing superstars were already comparing him to nothing that had come before. The card came with a burden most rookies never face: he had to be historic just to meet expectations. He met them and then some. In his 2023-24 rookie season he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game, and the numbers only tell part of it — in February he produced the first 10-block triple-double by a rookie since David Robinson in 1990, then followed it eleven days later with just the second 5x5 game by a rookie since steals and blocks became official stats, and in late March put up a 40-point, 20-rebound game that only four other rookies in history had matched. He was a unanimous Rookie of the Year, the first unanimous winner since Karl-Anthony Towns, and the first Frenchman to take the award. He also finished as runner-up in Defensive Player of the Year voting as a rookie, a finish matched by only one other player, Manute Bol, in league history. The story did not stay uncomplicated. His second season was, if anything, even more dominant statistically — he was averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and a league-leading 176 blocks and had just made his first All-Star team — when doctors discovered deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, a blood clot serious enough that it ended his season in February 2025 and put his career in real jeopardy before surgery and months of anticoagulant treatment resolved it. He was cleared to return that July, and came back in 2025-26 to lead the Spurs to a 62-win season and their first trip to the NBA Finals since the Duncan-Parker-Ginóbili era, finishing third in MVP voting and winning Defensive Player of the Year as the league's first unanimous selection for that award. This card is his flagship rookie issue: the 2023-24 Panini Prizm base card, number 136, pictured in his Spurs uniform in the set most collectors point to first when discussing his rookie class alongside Panini Select. Prizm's chrome finish and rainbow of parallels turned this single card number into one of the most heavily produced and heavily chased rookie issues of the modern hobby, a base entry point into a career that has already swung from generational hype, to a serious health scare, to a Finals run and a Defensive Player of the Year trophy — the full arc that collectors are still watching unfold.
