Description
Victor Wembanyama arrived in the NBA with more advance hype than any prospect since LeBron James. Playing his final season in France for Metropolitans 92, the 19-year-old Frenchman was already drawing comparisons to Kevin Durant and Rudy Gobert for his mix of size and skill, and after an MVP season in the LNB Pro A the San Antonio Spurs won the draft lottery and made him the first overall pick in June 2023, the highest a French player had ever been drafted. This 2023-24 Panini Instant card, printed and shipped in the days after that draft, is his true rookie card. His rookie season more than matched the noise around him. The San Antonio Spurs center averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game. He produced feats no rookie had managed in decades or ever: in February he became the first rookie since David Robinson in 1990 to record a 10-block triple-double, and eleven days later he recorded a 5x5 game, becoming the second rookie to ever do so since blocks and steals became an official stat in 1973-74. He received all 99 first-place votes from a media panel, making him the first unanimous Rookie of the Year since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015-16, and the first player from France to win the award. He also became the first rookie to make the NBA's First Team All-Defense, and the youngest player in league history to do so. The story did not run smoothly upward from there. After a breakout second season in which he made his first All-Star team, San Antonio announced he would miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a life-threatening deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, discovered shortly after the All-Star Game. It was a genuinely frightening diagnosis for a 21-year-old at the height of a historic run, and doctors involved described the danger plainly. Dr. Brian Sutterer noted the clot could have traveled to his lungs and killed him. He spent months on blood thinners with no fixed return date before being medically cleared to play basketball again four months later. He came back for 2025-26 transformed. After an offseason of what he called brutal, world-class training, Wembanyama had the best season of his young career: he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game on his way to becoming the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in NBA history, while leading the Spurs to a 62-win regular season and their first NBA Finals appearance since 2014, making his second All-Star team and earning the franchise's first All-NBA First Team selection since Kawhi Leonard. A career that could have been derailed by a blood clot instead turned into one of the sport's defining seasons. This card is a small, unremarkable-looking piece of that origin story: a base Panini Instant issue, numbered to a limited print run and put into hobby hands within days of Wembanyama's draft night, before any of the rookie-of-the-year milestones, the blood clot, or the Finals run had happened. Panini Instant sets are produced on demand rather than in advance, so the print run reflects exactly how many collectors ordered the card in that narrow early window rather than a planned mass production.
