Description
Rickey Henderson arrived in the majors with Oakland on June 24, 1979, and by his first full season in 1980 he was already rewriting the record book, swiping 100 bases to break Ty Cobb's American League mark. He kept going from there — in 1982 he stole an astonishing 130 bases, shattering Lou Brock's single-season record, and he followed that with 108 more in 1983. He led the American League in stolen bases every year from 1980 through 1986, a run of dominance built on a combination of speed, plate discipline, and showmanship that made him the most feared leadoff man of his era. 1984 was Henderson's sixth and what turned out to be his last season with the Athletics for several years. His stolen-base total dipped to 66, modest only by his own staggering standard, but it was still enough to lead the league and more than the entire Yankees roster combined. Behind the scenes, Oakland was negotiating what would become one of the more consequential trades of the decade: on December 5, 1984, the Athletics sent Henderson and pitcher Bert Bradley to the New York Yankees for a package of five players, including future contributors Jose Rijo and Jay Howell. The trade closed the book on Henderson's original Oakland tenure just as the 1985 card sets were going to press. That timing is what makes this 1985 Topps issue notable. It captures Henderson in an Oakland Athletics uniform, the team and the stats line reflecting the season just completed, even though by the time collectors pulled the card from packs he was already a Yankee. It stands as his final Topps card as a member of the organization that drafted him in 1976 and watched him become a star, before he went east to dazzle a new fan base and, years later, returned to Oakland to help win a World Series. The long view on Henderson's career only grew from there. He finished with 1,406 career stolen bases and 2,295 runs scored, both standing as all-time MLB records, built across a 25-season career that also included 3,055 hits. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, remembered as the game's greatest leadoff hitter and most dangerous threat on the bases, a reputation already fully formed by the time this card left the factory.

How This Card Scores
This card scores 62% overall — the average of its five SWAPP™ ratings, each measured as set out below. A 41-year-old mainstream 1985 Topps base card of a Hall of Fame legend: broadly popular, heavily and steadily traded, but visually plain and far from scarce, with population likely numbering in the thousands across grading companies.
- SellabilityHigh · 86%
- High sellability index. As one of the most actively traded vintage stars, this card shows constant eBay turnover with new PSA/SGC/BGS graded copies selling weekly.
- Wow Factor45%
- Worked out from how the card looks: a 1980s-1990s card with a base design (no parallel or special finish), which starts at 45% on its design. No autograph or patch is needed for that score.
- Age88%
- Worked out from the card's age: released 1985-02, it has been out about 41 years. Each five years on the market adds to the score, from 40% at six months to 100% at fifty years. That puts it at 88%.
- Popularity73%
- Henderson is a Hall of Fame leadoff legend and the all-time stolen-base king, keeping his name a steady fixture in baseball history discussions and media.
- Population CountHigh* · 2.3K · 19% Rarity
- About 2,300 graded copies (estimated) across the grading companies — very high population. PSA alone lists nearly 1,800-1,870 graded copies of this card across all grades, and adding typical SGC/BGS/CGC volume for a popular base card like this suggests a combined total in the low thousands; this particular copy's Golden Grading label falls outside those major population reports.
