Description

LaMelo Ball has never had the luxury of a normal season, and this card lands right in the middle of the pattern. Drafted third overall by Charlotte out of Australia's NBL in 2020, he won Rookie of the Year in his debut season and made his first All-Star team the year after, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double along the way. But almost every year since has come with an asterisk: a broken wrist as a rookie, three separate ankle sprains and a fractured right ankle that required surgery in 2022-23, then a season-ending ankle injury again in 2023-24 that limited him to just 22 games despite career-best per-minute production. The 2024-25 campaign pictured on this card followed the same script, only louder. Ball opened the year as one of the best players in basketball, at one stretch averaging over 40 points a game across a four-game run, and on November 23 he erupted for a career-high 50 points, five rebounds, ten assists and five three-pointers against Milwaukee, becoming only the ninth player in NBA history to post a 50-5-10 line with five made threes. A calf strain sidelined him that same month, and by March the Hornets shut him down again, this time for arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle and a minor wrist procedure. He still finished the year averaging a career-high 25.2 points, 7.4 assists and 4.9 rebounds over 47 games, numbers matched by only a handful of players league-wide, and he led the NBA in fourth-quarter scoring. That combination, brilliance in flashes, punctuated by injury, is the story collectors are buying into with LaMelo Ball right now: a player whose ceiling is obvious every time he's healthy, and whose availability is the only open question left about his career. He has already climbed into the Hornets' all-time top five in three-pointers and assists and sits as the franchise's career leader in triple-doubles, all before turning 24. This particular card is not his rookie issue, that came in his 2020-21 debut year, but a base card from 2024-25 Panini Prizm Black, a brand-new standalone product that marked Prizm Black's first release as its own set after years as an insert inside other Panini lines. It arrived as one of Panini's last basketball products before the company's NBA license expired, giving the black-infused, shadowy Prizm design a bit of extra significance as a closing chapter for the brand on cardboard.
